What a Swedish massage includes
Your therapist works with oil in long, continuous strokes that follow the muscle rather than digging across it, at a pressure you set. Light to medium is the default. If you ask for firmer as the hour goes on, you will get it.
A 60-minute session covers the whole body. The 30-minute version is best treated as a focused session on the back, neck and shoulders. At 90 minutes there is room to spend real time anywhere you point out.
You undress to your own comfort level before the session starts.
Well suited to
- A first massage, if you have never booked one before
- Winding down rather than working anything out
- Regular monthly upkeep, which is what the membership covers
Swedish or deep tissue?
Choose Swedish if the goal is to relax and you want to leave feeling loose and unhurried. Choose deep tissue if there is a specific area you would describe as tight, and you are willing to trade some comfort during the hour for that focus.
You do not have to decide alone. Book either one and tell your therapist at the start what you are after.
Common questions
What is a Swedish massage?
A full-body massage using oil and long gliding strokes at light to medium pressure, working over the back, shoulders, arms, legs and neck. It is the most common style of massage offered in the United States.
What does a Swedish massage include?
Full-body coverage with oil, at a pressure you set with your therapist, in 30 to 90 minutes.
Is Swedish massage the same as a regular massage?
For most people, yes. When someone books a massage without specifying a style, Swedish is usually what they have in mind.
How often should you get a massage?
It depends on your goals and your budget. Monthly is a common rhythm, and it is the one our membership is built around: a one-hour Swedish massage each month, with unused months accruing through the year.
